Discovering the Southern Tip of Africa – The post-rainbow South African Story

The story of the South African democratic miracle is a parable told to illustrate the wonders of democracy, and the transition to a democratic society. On the 27th April 1994 Nelson Mandela, together with millions of South African cast their ballots in South Africa's first free and fair election. Today 15 years later, South Africa is part of the global family of democratic countries. The country will soon go to the polls whereafter its third democractically elected president will take office.

What has democracy meant for South Africa's young people – the Born Frees, the generation born on the eve of South Africa's first free election? How have they interpreted a new South African culture, social and economic identity, and political voice? What are their struggles, and their vision for a future South Africa.

Manenburg is an historically Apartheid segregated community. The young people who live there today continue to bear the scars of South Africa's past, while the New South Africa does not hold much promise for them either. For the young men and women of Manenburg, an education and a job will not come easy, not when their new enemy is unemployment, AIDS, substance addiction and an economic system which kills a dream before it has even begun.

This two-part lecture series will focus on the lives of working class South African young people. We view their lives through the lens of:

    * Culture – music, dance, poetry
    * Economic life – employment and unemployment
    * Education
    * Gender awareness
    * Political Voice

The lecture series will use images and research commissioned by Afrika Kontak through its work in the community of Manenburg, Cape Town.

This lecture series is developed in collaboration with Afrika Kontak. It will be  presented by Helga Jansen, a South African living in Denmark. Ms Jansen has worked in the trade union and Non-government organisation sector for many years, and has extensive experience in community and civil society issues as an organiser and trade union education facilitator. Most recently she worked in communications and television production.
