The project's objectives are:
1) to support leaders from 90 coastal communities in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal provinces to strengthen their skills and knowledge to mobilize and organize coastal communities, and
2) to facilitate an organizational structure so that coastal communities are organized in local, regional and provincial organizational structures.
The primary target is 450 leaders from 90 communities, including 50% women. The secondary audience is the approximately 44500 people from coastal communities that directly or indirectly will benefit from the project in the longer term. The strategy is based on 6 years experience from a similar project in collaboration with Africa Contact in Western and Northern Cape provinces. Implementation of the new national policy for the country's 30,000 inshore fishermen - which is a result of Masifundise's work since 2005 - will be a focal point for project activities. Core elements include knowledge and training via the media, field work and workshops at local, regional and national levels.
